What is diastasis recti repair?

Diastasis recti repair is a surgical procedure that closes the gap between the left and right rectus abdominis muscles when they have separated, typically due to pregnancy or significant weight changes.

Diastasis recti occurs when the two vertical bands of abdominal muscle (the rectus abdominis) stretch apart, creating a gap along the midline of the abdomen. This separation is common after pregnancy, significant weight gain, or intense abdominal strain. While the condition itself is not dangerous, it can cause cosmetic concerns, lower back discomfort, and weakness in core stability.

Surgical repair involves plicating (folding and suturing) the abdominal fascia to bring the separated muscles closer together and restore the integrity of the abdominal wall. This procedure is frequently performed as part of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to achieve both functional and aesthetic improvement. Plastic surgeons in Ontario often combine diastasis recti repair with skin removal and liposuction during body-contouring procedures to address the full scope of abdominal concerns.

The decision to repair diastasis recti is typically made when the separation causes functional issues, aesthetic dissatisfaction, or both. Body-contouring surgeons assess the extent of muscle separation during consultation to determine whether repair is warranted and how it fits into the overall surgical plan. Recovery involves temporary activity restrictions to allow the repair to heal properly.
