Fractional laser resurfacing is a skin treatment that uses laser energy to create microscopic columns of injury across a fraction of the skin's surface, leaving untreated areas intact to promote faster healing than full-field ablative resurfacing.

Fractional laser resurfacing divides the laser beam into thousands of tiny columns that penetrate the skin in a grid pattern, treating only a fraction of the skin surface while leaving surrounding tissue untouched. This approach differs fundamentally from full-field ablative lasers, which treat the entire facial area uniformly and remove the complete outer layer of skin.

The fractional method accelerates recovery because untreated zones between treated columns remain intact. These healthy areas supply growth factors and blood flow to speed healing, typically allowing patients to return to normal activity within a week or two rather than the 2-3 weeks often needed after full ablative treatment.
