What is hyaluronidase?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid filler, allowing it to be dissolved and removed from injection sites when needed for correction or reversal.

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that degrades hyaluronic acid, the primary ingredient in most dermal fillers used in Ontario clinics. When injected into areas where filler has been placed, it breaks the molecular bonds in the hyaluronic acid, causing the filler to dissolve over hours to days.

This enzyme serves a critical correction function in aesthetic practice. Plastic surgeons and registered nurses administer hyaluronidase when a patient requests filler reversal, when asymmetry or overcorrection occurs, or if migration or nodules develop after injection. It offers a way to address complications without waiting months for the filler to naturally resorb.

Hyaluronidase is supplied as a liquid injection, typically in concentrations like 150 units per 1.5 ml or 1500 units per 6 ml, depending on the formulation. The enzyme works quickly, which allows clinicians to assess results and perform touch-ups or re-injections in the same appointment if desired.

The medication is not considered a filler itself but a reversal agent. Its use requires proper training, sterile technique, and careful placement to ensure the enzyme targets only the intended filler deposit and does not affect surrounding tissue.
